What are those marks?
The British Standards Institution (BSI) proof-correction symbols are used both in Britain and internationally. These BSI symbols are added to an electronic or paper document by a proofreader or editor to indicate and correct problems in a text.
Proofreading for any budget
I provide a versatile proofreading service, starting from a basic check of your text for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors to a full proofread of your document, and anything in between. This can include:
- checking your text for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors;
- checking your text for consistency in spacing, layout, and alignment (for example, checking spacing before and after paragraphs and headings);
- checking your text for consistency of heading styles, paragraph styles, list styles, and fonts;
- checking displayed materials (such as illustrations, graphs, and tables) for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors;
- checking displayed materials for consistency in spacing, layout, alignment and positioning;
- checking displayed materials for consistency within and between them (for example, checking that captions are consistent in style and layout and match the material they are attached to);
- checking notes, references, and bibliographies for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors;
- checking notes, references, and bibliographies for consistency in style, spacing and layout.
I make corrections where things are wrong but I won't make changes if they’re not needed. I will note queries for anything in your document that needs clarification.
I can mark up your work onscreen in Adobe Reader using either BSI symbols or Comment tools, or in Microsoft Word using Track Changes. If you prefer dealing with hard copies I can mark up on paper using BSI symbols.
Note for students: Although most universities allow a professional proofreader to check your work, you should consult your university's guidelines on proofreading before contacting me.
